What is a Webinar?Okay, it's a weird word, but don't let it scare you. :o) A webinar is a way for me to show you things on my computer and talk to you about them. It's also a way we can interact together so you can ask questions and I can answer them right then. It's a web seminar. All you need is a computer that has Flash installed (98% of all computers already have it), a sound card and speakers (a headset with mic is recommended for interaction). See the webinar FAQs if you have questions or the webinar CALENDAR to view upcoming webinar dates.
LIVE TRAINING:Registration for live webinars must be completed at least 30 minutes before the webinar begins. To register, use the convenient PayPal link below or call toll-free 1-855-92-CHALK (Visa, Mastercard and Discover accepted). Technology Ideas for Language AssessmentsTuesday,
May 15, 2012 Paper and pencil tests might be able to measure a small portion of a student's mastery of a language, technology can help us expand the range of skills we're looking for in our students. In this webinar, we'll take you through some ways of using free (or low cost) online websites and software to assess your students and their acquisition of the target language. We'll start with a brief introduction to Quia, and then move on to using mashups, audio and video drop boxes and conversations on the CLEAR site. We'll also take you on a tour of websites that allow your students to make their own comics and animations (and add their own voice to them), discover Microsoft's Mouse Mischief, and many others! Integrating Music into the Language CurriculumTuesday,
May 22, 2012 (will be available as a
recording only as of 5/23) Music can be both a valuable and enjoyable way of bringing comprehensible input to your students. Most teenagers may not be able to memorize information for their classes, but if you play their favorite songs, you'll notice they know every word in them. When we use music as a tool in our classes, we can improve our students' comprehension and add to their cultural knowledge at the same time. In this webinar, we'll discuss ideas for utilizing three types of music: folk music, popular music, and educational music, and we'll see how well-timed music can be used to create a repetitious din of the target language that stays with the students throughout the day. Advanced SpanishDate/Time TBA Are you a Spanish teacher who would like to brush up on your Spanish? Our profe Benito is going to host a class for those who want to participate in an upper level Spanish time. Come join us for an evening of practice. Click here to join the webinar room. No registration is necessary for this class. ARCHIVED TEACHER TRAINING:Steps to Strides Series

Have your textbook or vocabulary list handy! Focusing on the Structures Registration:4-Personalizing Your QuestionsARCHIVED Personalizing is more than merely a drill asking each person the same personal question. It is a conversation between the teacher and a student, where the teacher then uses that conversation to draw in the other students. We'll look at the basics of personalization and practice working with it. Personalizing Your Questions Registration:5-Growing a Story TogetherARCHIVED When students and teachers work together to create a story, student interest and participation will go through the roof. Maintaining the MomentumARCHIVED
TPRS® can make the class fun, but sometimes the momentum begins to slide after you've been doing stories for a while. In this webinar we'll discuss using other activities to supplement your classes and help keep the momentum going, and also some ideas on how to deal with the physical fatigue factor.
Transitioning to TPRS®ARCHIVED
Now that you've decided to get into TPRS®, how do you start the transition? This webinar will give you ideas on how to ease the transition for your students as you switch from a traditional textbook methodology to TPRS®.
3 Levels + 1 Room = SuccessARCHIVED Are you teaching in a small school? Are you expected to teach a multi-level class with no extra prep time? Wouldn't it be nice if you could teach the same basic thing to everyone and yet have significant growth from all levels? In this session, you will see how TPRS® (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) can be applied effectively to make a successful multi-level classroom. Managing the Class While TPRS®ingARCHIVED Mastering the art of storytelling is only part of the equation when it comes to a real classroom. Interested in some ideas on keeping the students' attention and encouraging their participation? In this webinar we'll go through some tips for managing the students during the three steps of TPRS and ways to motivate them to be more involved in the language acquisition process. TPRS®-Friendly Assessment IdeasARCHIVED It's time to think outside the box! Paper and pencil assessments aren't always the most accurate way of showing how proficient our students are in the language. In this session you will be introduced to various other types of assessments that will free up more time in class and possibly more time for you as a teacher. Reading TogetherARCHIVED Reading is a vital part of the TPRS® method, but many students don't like to read on their own. How can you engage the students while also teaching them to read in another language? In this hour session, presenter Deb Read will take you through the steps of reading together with the entire class using Chalkboard Productions' Big Screen Readers, using circling and personalized questions and answers that can be used with any material you read together with your class. Digitial Storytelling with AliceNow
ARCHIVED Alice is a free 3-D animation program that can be an effective way for students to illustrate a story in any language. Although originally created for beginning computer programming students, Alice is easy for anyone to use. Students enjoy watching their stories come to life. The program can also be used to upload their creations to YouTube. In this webinar, we'll learn the steps to set up an Alice world, including adding objects, animating those objects, using billboards, making speech bubbles, as well as inserting sounds and recorded voices. TPRS® Work? I
ordered a bunch of your stuff awhile back, and as a TPRS teacher, I LOVE
LOVE LOVE your materials more than I can say! They have made my life so
much easier and they've allowed me to make the structures and the vocabulary
100% comprehensible for my students! I just wanted to say that I am assuredly
your biggest fan and I look forward to more! From the bottom of my heart,
THANK YOU! Just wanted to let you know... I just watched your "Reading with Kids" webinar, which was fabulous,(I have also purchased and used/am using "La Ardilla Azul," "Duckopolis," and "Nuestra Comunidad". I will be watching your Alternate Realities Webinar, as well, though probably not live. Thank you for helping to make me a better teacher, and for helping to make my job easier! Keep the good stuff coming! ---Heather B.
I
so enjoyed your webinar on alternate realities! I have known people who
have studied languages using this method (and loved it). The idea of using
the ducks is so very cute, and I can imagine how much my high school Spanish
students would love all the engaging activities you include!
